But First the Foreground

I love taking photographs and I love writing. Which is why I do both. Whether working as a freelancer or as a staffer on a newspaper, I’ve always tried to supply both copy and imagery. Why? Because as a reporter, I knew that my photographs would reinforce my writing and act as an aide memoire. And I still offer that dual service when the situation arises. But it’s also true that each skill stands proudly on its own.

Powerful Imagery creates lasting memories, has a big impact on the viewer and can elicit strong emotions.

Use a picture. It paints a thousand words.

Words credited in 1911 to the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper editor Tess Flanders. And that’s my aim, to make every picture I take tell a story, to say what you want to say or feel, to expand in the viewer’s mind with unheard words.

Writing can do the same thing, and sometimes more. Language has the power to captivate and enthrall, convince and convert.

My task, which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel … it is, before all, to make you see.

Like Joseph Conrad, with the eloquence of language, I aim to achieve those very same goals in my writing.

The Background

For the last 19 years I’ve worked primarily as a Freelance Journalist and Photographer, preferring the freedom allowed outside the confines of employment. But occasionally one is lured by the financial security of being a staffer on a newspaper. Employed newspaper positions have included:

  • Express and Echo, Exeter – Senior Features Writer, Senior News Reporter, Business Correspondent.
  • Khaleej Times – Senior News Reporter and Photographer. Based in Dubai, I covered stories in the United Arab Emirates and the broader MENA region.

For fourteen years, whether or not I was employed, I was the  Senior Reporter for Nexus, a monthly international magazine that went out to English-speaking expatriates around the globe. Covering industries such as construction, mining, oil and gas, I was responsible for writing features, news articles, country reports and analyses and much more. Frequently my photographs complemented my copy and or/featured on the cover of the magazine.

Clients have included: The Institute of Directors, Francis Frith Books, Dorling Kindersley, Octane Magazine, Vision magazine, New Holland Publishers, Magna Large Print, Salt Magazine and Philanthropy Age. Not to mention the numbers of private clients who have used my services for either photography, writing or editing.
